Under the Stars: 9th Grade Knights Inaugurate New Tradition

Our 9th Graders traded classrooms for campsites this week! The Class of 2028 gathered for an unforgettable tech-free overnight retreat.
At The Pine School, our beautiful 174-acre campus is more than just a backdrop for learning; it is a living space for growth, connection, and making memories. This past week, we unlocked a new way to utilize our grounds while revitalizing a cherished tradition: the 9th Grade Overnight Retreat.

Building on the legacy of the pre-COVID "No Such Thing Night" (originally established in 2005), this year’s retreat brought fresh energy and a new twist—camping right here on campus.
While our students share the campus during the school day, staying overnight offers a unique sense of ownership of the space. As the sun set, 9th Graders headed to the top of the hill by the main entrance to set up camp. Bonds were quickly forged over the shared struggle of pitching tents, followed by a night packed with activities driven by the students themselves.
From advisory competitions and s’mores by the campfire to campus-wide games of Manhunt and a midnight ice cream party on the quad, the agenda was designed by 9th Grade class leaders to maximize fun and connection.
The event was notably "tech-free," allowing students to truly disconnect to reconnect.
"It was a great way for all of us to get closer,” shared Class President Roxie Hesler. “It was refreshing not to have our phones and use our problem-solving skills to build tents and be able to camp outdoors."
"Because we have such amazing outdoor space... it has always been my dream to have the freshmen class not only stay overnight but camp overnight,” added Director of Admission Beth Lettengarver. “When we blink they will be walking across the stage for graduation and I hope this night will stay with them as (one of many) perfect PINE memories."
The 9th Graders displayed incredible teamwork and leadership, setting a high bar for what we hope will become an annual "Knights under the stars" tradition!
