Flexible Tuition - Investing In Your Child’s Future
“Our son has truly benefitted from the small classes, quality teachers and unique opportunities which are the hallmarks of an education at The Pine School. Being an active member of this close-knit community for over 10 years has better prepared our son for life, which is the ultimate return on our investment.”
- Steve and Andrea Wood
The Pine School allocates more than 1 million dollars in flexible tuition each year. The average grant is 44% and flexible tuition reached 30% of the entire student body. We plan to continue this commitment to access, providing families with the ability to enroll who otherwise might not be able to consider a Pine School education.
“We love the Pine School! Our girls have grown and matured within this amazing village of educators. Although we were very concerned that this priceless experience would be beyond our budget, the Pine School worked with us continually to make this an affordable sacrifice. We will forever be grateful Knights! We know our girls are definitely reaping the rewards of being Pine School students.”
- Gregory & Michelle Cox
Flexible Tuition Program
The Pine School’s Flexible Tuition Program allows interested families to apply for a “flexed” tuition based on their financial picture. The Program entails an assessment of a family’s ability to pay independent school tuition, determines if a family is eligible, and then reduces the tuition and fees required based on the amount a family can pay. The Pine School’s Program has a limited budget and while the School cannot guarantee flexible tuition, we strive to provide it to the widest possible socio-economic range of students.
In reviewing each application, the Flexible Tuition Committee considers both FACTS recommendation and any additional financial information the family is asked to provide including: the family’s other children, additional dependents, all sources of income, priority of spending, debts and expenses. The School believes that parents have an obligation to pay the educational expenses of their children. Therefore, all Pine School families pay some tuition.
Our Explanation of Method section covers many questions that have to do with policy. Please read through all of them, especially if you are new to the process.
Explanation of Method
How does The Pine School decide who pays what? The Pine School considers the following factors to determine a family's financial strength and, therefore, a Flexible Tuition grant.
Assets
Family assets may include: taxable wages, if self- employed, income drawn as salary but not included as business profit, taxable dividend and/or interest income, alimony received, pensions, annuities, rent, royalties, estates or trusts, household expenses paid by separated or divorced spouse in lieu of alimony, unemployment compensation, capital gains, taxable IRA distributions, Keogh plan payments, profits from a business, child support received, Social Security benefits, real estate, vehicles, bank accounts, investments and student income/assets.
Expenses & Debt
Typical expenses and debts: educational expenses, encumbrances against home, medical/dental expenses, debts for investments, prolonged illness, unemployment, past business debts, uninsured natural disasters, past funeral expenses, legal fees, nursing home/assisted living care, closing costs for home purchases/refinancing, child support, costs for a child with special needs, and child care.
Non-Working Parent
For families with a child over the age of six, if one parent chooses not to work, we input a median income of $27,000 to that parent for the purposes of calculating Flexible Tuition.
Filing Status
Filing status: divorced, separated, never married, or widowed. Awards will not be considered unless complete financial information is received from both parents. If parents are separated, divorced, or never married, both parents are required to complete the Flexible Tuition application. It is expected that both parents and appropriate stepparents contribute to the education of their child regardless of legal agreements. The Pine School's Flexible Tuition Committee does not feel bound by the assertion that one parent disclaims responsibility for educational expenses.
How to Apply for Flexible Tuition
Please read The Pine School Flexible Tuition Guidelines document for a more detailed overview and explanation of the process at The Pine School.
The Flexible Tuition application process is handled by FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment. FACTS Grand & Aid Assessment is an independent, third party company that conducts financial analysis to determine your family’s financial need. The Pine School receives a confidential report outlining your financial situation based on the information obtained in your application and supporting tax documents. The Pine School is solely responsible for determining the final aid award. The analysis completed by FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment serves as a recommendation only.
